In 2020, Leyla was elected by the students of the University of St Andrews to become the next Rector of the University. The Rector is elected every three years to represent student interests on University Court, the highest governing body at the University. In her role, Leyla and her team of students shape discourse, culture, and policies in St Andrews.

Leyla was elected on a campaign for greater Access, Action, and Accountability. Her work involves listening to students and working with them to address key issues affecting their experiences. She supports young people in St Andrews to use their voices and their power to stand up for community change, inclusivity, and intersectionality.
